Technology company Sun Microsystems Inc announced on Thursday (7 August) the release of a new social networking game for social networking site Facebook, which enables fans of the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympic Games to compete online by predicting medal winners throughout this summer's events.
According to the company, the application, MyPicks Beijing 2008, enables participants to pick gold, silver and bronze medal winners for each event during the Beijing Olympics, and win points for their country with each correct prediction. At the conclusion of the Games, the country with the highest points total will be declared the winner of the MyPicks Beijing 2008 Games.
The application was reportedly developed by Pramati Technologies using zembly, Sun's browser-based social application development environment. Released in private beta in June 2008, zembly is a social programming environment designed for creating and hosting social applications targeting platforms including Facebook, Meebo, OpenSocial and the iPhone. It utilises Sun hardware on Network.com, while taking advantage of Sun's software stack, including the Solaris 10 Operating System, GlassFish application server and MySQL database.
MyPicks Beijing 2008 is available on Facebook at: http://apps.facebook.com/mypicksbeijing/Home.
