Social networking sites are banned by nearly a quarter of all U.S. companies, many of which view them as a drain on productivity.
According to a survey of 200 human-resources professionals, most companies do not have a formal policy on their employees’ use of sites such as Facebook Inc. or MySpace.com. However, 22 percent block them in the workplace.
The survey, conducted by Chicago-based human-resources consulting firm Challenger Gray & Christmas Inc., also says 8 percent of companies encourage use of the sites, which can help employees network, market their products and reach colleagues.
“Of course, every company must examine its workplace and evaluate whether social networking has the potential to be a valuable tool or simply another distraction,” says John Challenger, the firm’s chief executive.
